Luxury Home Design: Easy Ways to Incorporate the Pantone Color of the Year and Other 2017 Trends

From incorporating the fresh and trendy color of the year, to mixing up metals, there are plenty of ways to revamp your luxury home design this year!

Color(s) of the Year

Luxury home design idea: incorporate the Pantone Color of the Year

Show me the green. Greenery, that is – the 2017 Pantone color of the year. This springy, natural color looks fantastic with many different wood finishes and stains. And according to the Pantone Color Institute, the color is a symbol of fresh, new beginnings and renewed energy. Try painting an accent wall in your Sonoma County home, like in a kitchen or bathroom, or bring in some Greenery serving dishes, towels or pillows. Since this is a color found in nature, maybe even outside your window if you’re near Sonoma wineries, you can also pull in natural accents like a bowl of green apples or some eco-boosting house plants.

If the bright Pantone color of the year is not quite your shade, turn to Benjamin Moore’s 2017 color of the year: Shadow. This rich purple color is bold and goes well with other jewel tones like emerald and ruby. The amethyst shade can be both dramatic and sophisticated.

Mix Textures and Shades

Move over brushed silver, brushed brass finishes are in! Brushed or satin brass finishes are an easy way to add elegance to your luxury home design. Think cabinet handles, picture frames, candle holders and sconces. Using a brushed brass mutes the shininess of the gold color, making it a great complement to a variety of existing home styles. And don’t be afraid to mix metals – brushed brass, shiny chrome and rugged steel can all work surprisingly well together.

Speaking of mixing colors, try a little white and off white with your new brushed brass décor. A room dressed in only one color can look drab and monotone, and white can look especially sterile. But mixing up different shades of white and neutral can add both depth and warmth. This design trend can be as easy as adding cream pillows or a nubby linen duvet cover.

Smart Luxury Home Design

Google Home

Google Home

Make your home smarter and control most things from your phone, from the temperature to the lights. Installing smart thermostats is not only easy and on trend, but it can actually save you money on energy bills if you take advantage of the programming features.

Then there is the voice-activated home helpers. Think Amazon.com’s Alexa, which can control your smart devises through verbal commands. The third party integration of assistants like Alexa can work with literally thousands of brands, companies and devises. Also look for Google Home, a recently launched assistant on the same track as Alexa but backed by the virtual and worldwide powerhouse.

Spend Money Where you Spend Time

The top areas of a home to remodel are usually the bathrooms and kitchen, but think about the other places you spend a lot of time or that your guests see most. Making laundry rooms not just functional but pretty is on trend for 2017, especially as people realize how much time they actually spend doing laundry. And don’t neglect your entryways! This is the first place people see when they enter your home, and sometimes the last visual you have when you leave. Make it inviting, warm and clutter-free with special design elements like custom flooring (even a nice rug), an intricate front door, artwork and lighting fixtures.

Freshening up your luxury home design can be purely subjective, but if you’re thinking about selling your luxury home, these little details can boost visual appeal and both perceived and actual value. Today’s home buyers are looking for top of the line technology and they want to see how their modern furnishings will fit into your home. Keeping your design modern, or at least a few elements of it, will appeal to buyers. Are you curious what trends, changes and remodels could add or decrease value in your Marin or Sonoma County home?
